We've published a book, and there's a story within this story.
This delightful children's book is in fact the product of an extraordinary partnership between the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission and the students of Farnsworth Middle School. This fanciful yet scientifically-accurate tale of a Karner blue butterfly was written by former Farnsworth Middle School student Natasha Permaul, with creative artwork by Mrs. Romano and her students, along with photos provided by Albany Pine Bush volunteers Kirstin Russell and Robert Stone. It is a reflection of the students' journey and experience in this unique partnership between the Guilderland School District and the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission.
The Farnsworth Middle School Pine Bush Project is an active, rewarding and groundbreaking program in which students in grades 6 and 7 participate in authentic scientific research. In collaboration with the Commission, students conduct long-term studies in ecological restoration and work to raise endangered Karner blue butterflies for release in newly-restored habitat within the Preserve.
The Commission will celebrate the achievement with a book signing party from 1pm-4pm on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center, 195 New Karner Road in Albany.
The event will include a reading of the book by the author, a StoryWalk® of the book on the trails of the Pine Bush led by Discovery Center educators, Karner blue crafts and refreshments. You can purchase a copy of the book in our Discovery Shop.
